Paper wasp in Panama

After half a day of riding an ATV through the jungle in Bocas del Toro, I found this giant paper wasp on tree right next to the beach. Anyone know the exact species?

Mayan Temple in Tikal

It’s not hard to see how Mayan cities of old can be swallowed by the jungle. This temple in Tikal, Guatemala stands well above the nearby trees, and is adorned with a special room at the top for priests to perform rituals.Temple in Tikal.JPG

Limnian Sunset

This breathtaking view was about 100 meters high on a cliff overlooking the sea. From up here, when the sun was JUST right, you could actually see Mt. Athos on the mainland. Limnos is a Greek island just off the Turkish coast, and has been discussed as far back as Homer.IMGP0554

Badwater Basin, Death Valley

Badwater basin 2014I visited Death Valley in February of 2014 and was lucky enough to see rain and even a small amount of water accumulation on the ground. The result were flowers erupting in small patches all over the barren looking landscape. My father and I spent more than a day driving though, hiking over, taking photos of and staring in marvel at the engulfing desert all around us.

Calsbar Quarry, Gulliver, Michigan

Calsbar Quarry

A colorful glimpse into a unique quarry in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This former limestone quarry was filled almost instantly when miners hit a natural spring. The white limestone gives the water an almost tropical color, while remaining crystal clear to see the sunken buildings, equipment, logs, and wildlife at the bottom (about 20 feet deep when this photo was taken). It used to be one of my favorite swimming places, but was drained in recent years to resume limestone mining.
